National Global Resolution Update from MVC

Dear Scouting Families and Friends:

We want to provide an update for you regarding the abuse claims and bankruptcy status of the national organization. On July 1, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) announced a significant step toward a global resolution that would equitably compensate survivors and ensure Scouting’s future. The financial compensation for these victims is of critical importance; one child abused is one child too many and we must do all that we can for these individuals.

The proposed settlement is $850 million, composed of contributions from the national organization and local councils.

Our goal is to have minimal impact on Scouting at the local level because of this settlement.

The Miami Valley Council will continue to provide strong programming for our units. We remain focused on the over 2,000 youth we serve with 1,200 volunteers across five counties in the Miami Valley.

Our organization has developed some of the strongest expert-informed youth protection policies found in any youth-serving organization to ensure we are doing all we can to keep kids safe.

Additionally, we want to engage you as we define Scouting’s future in the Miami Valley. We are conducting FOUR “Defining Our Future” Listening Sessions around our council territory to share key updates on the National Bankruptcy and Global Resolution and our People (Membership), Programs, and Properties. We will also be seeking feedback from you about your expectations of our council and how our camps can best assist you in accomplishing your Scout’s goals. Please see the information below on the dates and locations of the ‘Defining Our Future’ Listening Sessions.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Jeff Schiavone, jeffrey.schiavone@scouting.org.

Thank you for your service to our youth and your passion for Scouting.

Sincerely,

‘DEFININING OUR FUTURE’ Listening Sessions

We hope you’ll join the Key Leadership of the Miami Valley Council for a 90-minute conversation (7:00P-8:30P) about Scouting’s future in the Miami Valley. You play an important role in defining that future and your feedback is critical to shape our programs and properties for our Scouts today and for generations to come. Discussion topics will include, but are not limited to, the National BSA Reorganizational Plan and what it means to Miami Valley Scouting, local membership trends and Scouting through COVID, and maintaining a sustainable property footprint, and what do our Miami Valley Scouts desire from our properties/camps?
